Gua Bao with Hot Dog & Fried Egg

Gua Bao with Hot Dog & Fried Egg

Gua Bao with Hot Dog & Fried Egg

Time: 15 minutes
Level: Easy
Serves: 1-2

Ingredients

• 2 steamed buns (gua bao) - often can be found in the frozen section of Asian markets
• 1-2 hot dogs or bratwursts
• 1 egg
• A few leaves of lettuce or other fresh greens
• 1-2 tsp Kun Taste Studio Crispy Chili Oil
• Optional additions: thinly sliced cucumber, fresh coriander

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Buns: Steam the gua bao according to the package directions until they are soft, warm, and fluffy. If you can't find gua bao, soft pita bread or small hamburger buns are a good substitute.

  2. Cook the Fillings: While the buns are steaming, cook the hot dog or bratwurst in a pan until golden brown and heated through. In a separate pan, fry an egg sunny-side-up, leaving the yolk nice and runny.

  3. Assemble the Bao: Open a warm steamed bun. Layer a leaf of lettuce inside, then add the cooked hot dog and the fried egg.

  4. Add the Magic: Drizzle a generous spoonful of Crispy Chili Oil over the top of the egg and hot dog. The warm oil will sizzle and release its incredible aroma. Top with sliced cucumber and fresh coriander, if desired.

  5. Serve Immediately: These are best enjoyed hot, while the bun is soft and the egg yolk is still runny. Be prepared for a delicious mess!

Pro Tips

  • Get Creative with Fillings: This is a great recipe to customize. Try it with leftover pulled pork, fried chicken, or crispy tofu instead of a hot dog.

  • Don't Skip the Runny Yolk: The creamy yolk mixes with the spicy chili oil to create an incredible sauce that ties everything together.

  • Warm the Buns Properly: Steaming is the best way to get that classic soft, fluffy texture. If you don't have a steamer, you can microwave them for 20-30 seconds, covered with a damp paper towel.
